The sun has been shining on some of the area’s budding gardeners.

Youngsters took part in a competition to grow the tallest sunflower - and the results were blooming lovely.

Millie Ford (8) of Lime Tree Road, Hucknall, was a cut above the rest with a staggering 8ft 7in flower. Runner up was three-year-old Scarlet Paulson, also of Lime Tree Road.

A prize for best effort was awarded to Mollie Wright (3) by councillor for Hucknall East, and avid gardening enthusiast, David Shaw.

The competition was organised by Welbeck Community Association (WBA) who handed out the seeds, pots and compost in April.

Judging took place at the end of August out and a decision was finally reached on Saturday.

Chairperson for the WBA Dennis Mayoh, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in making this a fun and successful event.”

He gave special thanks to Coun Shaw who provided the winner’s trophy, Reuben Shaw & Sons (Hollydene Nursery) for donating garden centre vouchers and The Broomhill Inn for providing a venue for WCA events.
