THE unveiling of a memorial mine car will mark a day of nostalgia for former Calverton Colliery workers, many of whom hail from the Dispatch district.
The piece of mining equipment, known as a ‘pit tub’, was used to transport material underground. It will now stand as a memorial to pit workers who served throughout the colliery’s lifespan.
The event is a chance to reflect on mining heritage and to share a drink and stories with former colleagues.
It takes place more than 12 years after the closure of the pit in 1999.
There will be an exhibition of mining equipment, including models and photographs of the old pit. Live music will be provided by Carlton Brass, a community-based band.
A book of remembrance will be opened for those wishing to honour old friends in writing.
The reunion event will take place on Sunday October 2 at a green by Calverton Working Men’s Club. For more information, ring Mick Lloyd, chairman of Calverton Colliery Memorial Trust, on 0115 8477598.
