AN ABANDONED suitcase, packed with rubbish, was among the items collected during a community clean-up held in the George Street area of Hucknall.

Residents came out in force to support the initiative, which ran for six days and culminated in a two-hour blitz.

The initiative, which was the brainchild of the George Street Tenants and Residents Association, earned backing from Ashfield District Council through its communty protection team.

Among those who took part were a group of youngsters, dressed in orange high-visibility vests and armed with hand-held litter-pickers.

Dozens of bags of rubbish were collected and gutters and hedge bottoms were cleared of empty crisp-packets, drinks cans and bottles.

One concern was the amount of broken glass that was found in the area.

Coun John Wilmott (Lab), of Hucknall, who is deputy leader of Ashfield Council, also took part and thanked residents for their support.
