THE FORMER Hucknall police chief accused of committing sex offences against a child has been ordered to remain in custody.

Insp Russell Dew (44) faces two allegations of sexual activity with a 13-year-old schoolgirl.

He made an appearance at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday.

He only spoke to confirm his name and was remanded in custody until his next appearance, which will be on Monday October 24.

The court heard that this is likely to be at Derby Crown Court.

The Dispatch reported news of Dew’s arrest and subsequent charge in last week’s paper.

He is yet to enter pleas and full details of the accusations have yet to be released.

All that is known is that the offences are alleged to have happened in Newark during the last year.

Dew has recently been based at Mansfield police station.

But he was Hucknall’s top cop from October 2008 and was at the helm of the town’s police force for almost two years.

Dew is originally from Melbourne, Australia, and moved to England in 1985.

A married man, he spent eight years in the Royal Navy before joining the Metropolitan Police in London.

He has been suspended from his job.
