Council promises to help homeless

SENIOR councillors have backed moves to create an action plan to reduce homelessness in Hucknall and the rest of Ashfield.

Members of Ashfield District Council’s Cabinet have been told that the ongoing economic crisis, planned changes to the benefits system and cuts by Notts County Council are set to impact on the number of locals who find themselves without a home.

Coun Dave Shaw (Lab), of Hucknall, who chaired a review into the problem, told the meeting that homelessness in the district went up by 18% between October and December last year.

The recommendations moved by the Cabinet include considering the possibility of setting up a night shelter in winter, providing debt advice and improving joint working with partner agencies.

Council leader, Coun John Knight (Lab) said: “At district-council level, we are now taking on what the county council and government have refused to do.”
