WELL-known businessman Jim Payne, who first opened premises on Hucknall High Street 68 years ago, has died. He was aged 89.
Mr Payne (pictured), of Cinderhill Road, Bulwell, launched Skeavington And Payne with business partner Harold Skeavington in 1954.
The shop specialised in selling and repairing televisions and domestic appliances.
Mr Payne ran the business until 1987 when his son, Mick, bought it and changed it to SP Electronics, which still occupies the same site today and specialises in computers.
Mr Payne snr was born in 1922 in Church Gresley, Swadlincote, Derbyshire. His family then moved to Hucknall where he attended Beardall Street School.
He later worked for the Co-op in Hucknall before starting his own business. A former member of the Round Table, Mr Payne snr was also a keen golfer.
He died at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham on Thursday April 12. Mr Payne leaves his wife of 51 years, Hazel, three children, Mick, Ann Smith and Sally Mason, stepdaughter Tina and several grandchildren.
The funeral is at the Wesleyan Reform Church on Annesley Road, Hucknall on Thursday April 26.
