Selston Independents councillor Gail Turner has called for Coun Lachlan Morrison to stand down as chairman of the Ashfield Labour Party’s Standards Committee.

The prominent Labour councillor, who is also the party’s chief whip, has resigned from his job after admitting he used items from his employer to refurbish his local party HQ.

Mr Morrison, who worked for Nottingham City Homes, admitted using a small amount of goods belonging to his employer while volunteering on the refurbishment of a new Labour Party office in Hucknall.

Said Coun Turner: “Lachlan Morrison is chairman of the Standards Committee and that monitors the behaviour of councillors.

“He has no business being chairman of that committee any longer and should resign from his post.”

Mr Morrison told Chad: “I notified my employer immediately and reimbursed them for the value of the goods used, which was £22.”

“I acknowledged the mistake I made and resigned my position with immediate effect.”

Coun Jason Zadrozny, Ashfield Liberal Democrats leader, said: “We are one of the poorest constituencies in the country, so when we have a Labour councillor stealing from a social housing provider, you have to ask whose side they are on.”

Coun Chris Baron, leader of Ashfield District Council, said: “One would hope that Coun Morrison makes the correct decision.”
