A WELL-known former member of Bulwell Forest Golf Club is still in the swing of things after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Charles Jarvis, who lives in Bakersfield, was born in the same year the Titanic was launched and on the day Amundsen beat Scott in the race to be the first to reach the South Pole.

He left school at 14 and later served in the Army in Africa during World War Two.

After returning to Nottinghamshire he became an advertising representative for local newspapers and regularly worked with businesses in the Dispatch district.

He married work colleague Irene Caunt in 1959 and their marriage lasted more than 50 years. He has two daughters, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mr Jarvis is now wheelchair-bound after breaking both his hips in separate accidents in 2008.
