Severn Trent Water is urging customers to be on the alert for bogus letters and callers after an elderly lady in Bulwell received a fake letter telling her the water company needed to fix a leak in her home.

Chris Francis, from Severn Trent Water’s security team, said: “It’s worrying that conmen are going to new lengths to get access into people’s homes. These fake letters were posted to vulnerable people saying Severn Trent Water needed to get into their home to fix a leak.”

A hotline number (0345 604 1655) can be called at any time to report suspicious letters or callers.

PC Andrea Gummer, from Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The letter sounds convincing enough and is obviously showing the lengths that bogus callers will go to in order to gain access to your home.

“Trading standards have been informed by the police and we will continue to monitor like methods. If you do see anything suspicious please call the police on 101.”
