Head shave for cancer stranger

Have your say

A KIND-hearted Hucknall woman is having her head shaved to raise money for potentially life-saving cancer treatment for a woman she has never even met.

Melanie Mills (pictured), is taking part in the sponsored event after hearing about the plight of Nicola Vaux — the wife of a colleague of Melanie’s husband, Iain, who is a pilot for Monarch Airlines.

Nicola (36), from Warwickshire, was diagnosed with colon cancer last year and has secondary tumours in her liver.

She has undergone chemotherapy on the NHS but after doctors said there was nothing more they could do, her only hope in beating the cancer is to have costly private treatment.

Said Melanie (31): “I have been inspired to do this because Nicola has two children — a four-year-old and and a two-year-old — who are the same age as my children.”

Nicola’s family has already raised around £100,000 towards her treatment and now her friends and well-wishers are rallying round to help raise £20,000 more, with a catalogue of sponsored and fundraising events being organised.

“We are halfway there so far,” said Melanie, of Falcon Way, off Papplewick Lane.

“Myself alone, we know for definite I have raised over £1,300.”

Melanie’s head shave will take place at the Ladz & Dadz barber’s shop on Watnall Road at 9.30 am next Friday (May 20).

She said: “I thought ‘I need to do something quite drastic that’s going to grab people’s attention’.

“I’m not nervous — it will grow back. It might mean me looking daft for a couple of months but if it helps me raise the money that means Nicola can potentially see her children grow up, it will be worth it.”
