Artists from Hucknall are exhibiting over 40 pieces of their work at Kimberley Library until August 22.

Hucknall Art Society’s chair Harry Bown said the exhibition was the first of its kind for the 20-strong group, which normally exhibits in its home-town.

The collection represents the efforts of about ten artists in a variety of different media - water-colours, acrylics and pencils.

Mr Bown, 82, of Mollington Square in Cinderhill, is showing two pencil drawings of Audrey Hepburn and Ava Gardener - but says he doesn’t ‘pretend to be an artist.’

He said: “It began when I was retired. You either nod off in front of the television because it’s so awful or you look for something to do.

“I joined at the age of 70 - and had not done any art since I left school in 1948. It’s as enjoyable as you want it to be.

“We treat it a bit like a social club. If people want to chat and not paint no problem at all! And they seem to keep coming!”

He took over as chair four years ago because membership was dwindling: “It looked like things might pack up. We are quite elderly. But I wasn’t prepared to let it fall apart.”

The society meets at Watnall Road Community Centre from 7pm - 9pm on the last Wednesday of every month (except July and August). First class artists demonstrate their skills for the group and share artistic tips.

Mr Bown said: “I have been bringing in some of the best. We have had TV watercolour artist Matthew Palmer from Langwith. Geoff Kersey, a professional landscape artist from Darley Dale, who works in both watercolour and oil. On the last Wednesday in September we will have Rob Wearing, the portrait painter. He is going to paint a member of the society.”
