WHEN Hucknall’s Abbie Sims met boy band McFly it was a dream come true and a day she will never forget.
It has become one of her treasured memories from a time she would prefer to forget when she had to endure numerous surgeries and months of treatment for a brain tumour.
Abbie was only seven when she was diagnosed, and now 10 years on, her family continue to fundraise for the charity which fulfilled her fantasy.
“Ever since Abbie benefited from the When You Wish Upon A Star charity we have been fundraising to put something back,” said mum Mandy from their Penhale Drive home. “So for 10 years we have been doing countless activities to collect cash for this charity and others.”
The family, together with supportive friends and neighbours have helped raise £18,000 over the years but isn’t stopping there.
“This year we have a few events planned,” added Mandy. “Abbie’s older sister Emma came up with the idea of zorbing which I am really dreading.
“A group of family friends are then going to embark on running up the Yorkshire Three Peaks in under eight hours .
“August will then see another group of us climb the Old Man of Coniston which is 2,634 ft high.
“And finally I will be entering the Great North Run in September.”
Abbie had to undergo surgery again in 2009 when a scan revealed her tumour had returned and spread.
“ It was devastating news,” said Mandy. “The surgery left her with complete homonymous hemianopia which means she is registered blind.
“She also struggles with her audio memory and her brain processing speed is very slow along with other problems but she is doing well and currently studying Alevels at Holgate School.
“Abbie works really hard and has learned to adapt to her disabilities and just gets on with it.”
The group are hoping to raise £800 from this year’s events which will pay for a child and their carer to go on a trip to Lapland.
Mandy added: “Abbie is really proud of what we do each year and recognises the difference her dream coming true made to her life and that we want to make dreams come true for other children.”
