Hucknall principal back in school after heart op

Hucknall’s National Academy has welcomed back its principal after a major health scare kept him off work for three months.

Dr John Edwards took ill on 2nd May and was found to have suffered an aortic dissection.

This is where the main arerty carrying blood out of the heart has a tear in it.

Dr Edwards this week said that he underwent emergency medical procedures at City Hospital in Nottingham.

He said: “If the tear is complete then you are a gonner, but they found mine in time.

“A plastic pipe was used as a replacement for the aorta.

“I have to say I had first-rate medical care.”

Although Dr Edwards has returned to school, he is supporting staff and working with the acting prinicipal as he returns to fitness.

He added: “It takes a while to recover from something like this. I am undergoing physio and beginning to get back to fitness.”
