A well-known Hucknall cafe is set to close its doors for the final time, as its owner has decided to call it a day.

Edibles, in Watnall Road, has been open since January 2000 and has been serving snacks, breakfasts and lunches to hungry Hucknall folk ever since.

But owner Helen Clark has now decided to call time on the cafe after almost 13 years and concentrate her efforts on her flourishing catering business.

And it means that five people will lose their jobs when it closes on Saturday, December 21.

She said: “I decided about four weeks ago that we would close.

“I am, obviously, very disappointed but over the past couple of years there just has not been the footfall in the town centre.

“More and more pubs are doing food and other cafes have opened.

“That, and the recession, have meant that trade has not been as good as it used to be.

“We used to be so busy that people would walk around the shops and come back when there was space.”

Helen also said that when the cafe opened, it opened as a non-smoking venue, which was unusual at the time as it was before the blanket ban came into force for public buildings and workplaces.

Helen added: “We’ve had a great time over the years but now we are concentrating on the catering side of things, for weddings and corporate events.”

Customers have been leaving messages on the Edibles’ Facebook page.

Kathy Williams said: “Thanks for the 13 years of a wonderful cafe you have given us, wishing you all the best for the future xxx.”

Kate Ashsaid: “Boo. Won’t be the same without u lot x.”

And Claire Watkin said: “So sad Helen, thinking of you, with your fantastic yummy cakes & catering you do I’m sure you will be kept busy xx xx.”

Sandy Singleton, from the I Love Hucknall campaign group, which is working to promote business in the town centre, said: “It is such a shame that Halen has had to take this decision.

“It’s been a good cafe. I wish Helen all the best for the future and her catering business.

“There are a lot of cafes in Hucknall but we do have some new businesses opening up, such as a textiles shop and a mini-market.”

Helen says her catering business can cater for any occasion, such as small business lunches, themed buffets or a four-course wedding suppers, wedding receptions or other special occasions.
