A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested and released on police bail after a woman was shot at a pub on the edge of the Dispatch district.
The victim, also 23, was said to be in a stable condition in hospital after she was shot in the beer garden of the Vernon in Basford at about 9.30 pm on Friday August 17.
The pub is just a short distance from Vernon Park, which was visited by the Queen when she toured Nottingham during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations earlier this summer.
The shooting, which has shocked the nearby community, happened while the victim was attending a friend’s 21st birthday party.
The licensee of the Vernon Road pub, Ian King, said everyone was enjoying the party but after the shooting, ‘sheer panic’ set in.
Mr King said he heard people screaming ‘She’s been shot.’ After turning off music that was being played for the party, he went outside to see what had happened and immediately phoned for the police and paramedics.
A police spokesman said the victim’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. He added that an investigation into the shooting was continuing.
The spokesman said the shooting was not thought to be connected to others in different parts of Nottingham earlier this year.
Residents claim that trouble has frequently stemmed from the pub on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and attempts have been made for some years to get it shut down.
One woman, who did not want to be named, said her husband had grown up in the area but they were planning to move away because of the problems.
Neighbourhood watch co-ordinator Iris Busley said she did not believe it at first when someone told her about the shooting and she was really shocked.
Mr King said there had been a stigma about the pub for a long time but he thought things were improving until the shooting.
