A CREATIVE kitchen assistant from a school in Hucknall has won a prestigious national award for a complicated floral head-dress she made — from sugar!
Vicki Sims, who works at Holgate Comprehensive, landed a gold medal at the finishing touches competition at the Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA) conference.
It was in recognition of the eyecatching wedding head-dress featuring floral sugar sweet peas, roses, peonies and lilies.
To mark her achievement, Vicki was invited to the headquarters of Notts County Council where she was presented to the chairman of the council, Coun Keith Walker (Con), and asked to give a demonstration of her skills.
Vicki said: “I am self-taught and not trained in anyway so I am thrilled to have won this award.
“It is really a hobby and I mainly make cakes for friends and family.”
The Finishing Touches competition is organised by the LACA in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs.
It is aimed at all levels of staff employed in any aspect of local-council catering and capable of producing high-standard craft pieces.
It provides entrants with the opportunity to show off skills which would not normally be seen during their everyday profession.
Coun Keith Walker (Con), chairman of the county council, said: “Vicki won silver at last year’s awards, so winning the gold this year really is the icing on the cake!”
