Hucknall’s Leonie Mathers has been selected by the Labour Party as its candidate for the Sherwood constituency at the next general election.
The former Holgate Comprehensive pupil was selected following a postal ballot, and a hustings event that took place at the weekend in Rainworth, near Mansfield, and in Hucknall.
Leonie, who currently works as an advisor for Yvette Cooper MP, said: “I am honoured that Labour Party members in Sherwood have put their trust in me as their candidate for the next general election.
“I’m proud of my local roots, my hardworking, aspirational background and I am delighted to have an opportunity to give something back to the local community.
“As Labour’s candidate I am determined to stand up and fight for a better deal for Sherwood – I’ll be campaigning for decent jobs, for local services and for fairness and justice.”
Sitting MP Mark Spencer, a Conservative, has yet to be formally reselected by his party, but is likely to stand again in the election, which is expected in May 2015.
He said: “Congratulations to Leonie. I look forward to debating the future of Sherwood with her. I am hopeful of being reselected and if I am I will campaign on my record and what I have done. It will be up to the voters to decide.”
