Abbey benefactor was cricket fanatic
A BIOGRAPHY about Sir Julien Cahn, who presented Newstead Abbey to Nottingham Corporation in 1931, is reviewed in the latest edition of the publication, 'Hucknall Torkard Times'.
Sir Julien acquired his vast wealth as the head of England's biggest mass-market furniture empire in the 1930s.
In Hucknall, he gave money for retirement homes on Park Drive and the Orthopaedic Clinic on Derbyshire Lane.
The biography, by Sir Julien's grand-daughter, Miranda Rijks, focuses on his fanatical interest in cricket.
He set up an internationally-famous team, named after him, which took part in lavish world-tours. He was also president of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club at the time of the 'bodyline' controversy, involving the county's fast bowlers, Harold Larwood and Bill Voce.
Sir Julien and his wife, Phyllis, began their married life at the imposing Papplewick Grange, which had no fewer than eight bedrooms and five bathrooms.
