'Angel of mercy 'celebrates tenth birthday of charity shop
THE Hucknall charity shop of Nottingham Aid for Bosnia and Other Countries is now ten years old.
The shop is run by Carol Ridley-Barker, of Long Hill Rise, who said: "I can't believe a decade has passed so quickly.
"The shop has helped many people caught up in conflicts and we have been able to help them to rebuild their lives.
"I am proud to say that the shop has not wavered in its aims but has gone from strength to strength."
Carol (61) has paid numerous visits to Bosnia – so many, in fact, that she has become known to people there as an 'angel of mercy'.
Over the years, the shop has helped to fill no fewer than 50 large containers, taking aid to Africa.
Help has been given to 40 countries and also to needy causes in the UK, including hospitals.
"Hucknall people have always been very generous in supporting our charity," says Carol. "I hope this will continue because the need is as great as ever."
Carol has received devoted support from her husband, Peter, loyal assistant Yvonne Gore and other volunteers, incuding Brenda Ward.
It has not been all plain sailing with the shop, which was targeted in a burglary and theft of numerous rosary beads last December.
The premises were also affected by a fire in a neighbouring flat about two years ago and the shop's exterior is a constant target for fly-tipping.
