Appeal for more blood donors in Hucknall

HUCKNALL and Bulwell residents are being asked to show they care in the run up to Valentine’s Day by giving blood.

The national campaign 100k Donors in 100 days was launched by NHS Blood and Transplant department and comes to a close on February 14.

Now in the last few weeks of the initiative, they hope to encourage 381 more people to sign up from the Dispatch district and become blood donors in a bid to restock supplies and ultimately save lives.

“We are particularly eager to increase numbers of young donors too as these will become ‘the lifesavers of the future’,” said Anna Kerr, donor relations co-ordinator. “There has been a drop in recent years of young people donating.”

Young people are vital to the blood service, with 17-24 year olds accounting for around 40 per cent of new donors each year.

NHSBT spokesman, Jon Latham, said: “The number of young people donating has been falling for the last decade but this year there’s been a sharp drop and we now need 100,000 donors to sign up in the next 100 days to start addressing the shortfall.

“We welcome all eligible new donors, but a failure to boost the number of young donors now will put a strain on the blood service in the years to come.”
