Appeal for Rainbows’ memories

HISTORY of Hucknall’s Rainbows is being collected by its founder leader for an archive project.
Mavis Bentley, of Forest Lane, Papplewick, helped set up the 1st Hucknall North Rainbows unit back in 1989 and handed over the helm in 2003 to her daughter Julie Bentley-Housden who still runs it today.
Mavis remains a member of the Girl Guiding Nottinghamshire Trefoil Guild and is compiling an archive of the group’s activities over the years but has some missing years that she needs help filling.
“I’m building an archive to capture the history of Rainbows in Hucknall and am hoping that former members, parents and friends can help,’ said Mavis. “I’m interested in anything from photographs and press cuttings to scrapbooks and reports on unit activities, especially covering the years between 1990 and 2001.”
Mavis has managed to secure some items already from the other Rainbows’ groups in the area and individuals she is still in touch with, but still needs help with the missing years.
“I’m hoping that former members and parents of the girls who attended Rainbows during the years I don’t have anything from will have a selection of old photographs taken during trips, days out or special events held at the club,” added Mavis. “Anything is helpful.”
The reason Mavis is creating this archive is to fulfil a section of her challenge as part of The Discovery Awards.
This is a nationwide scheme linked to the Duke of Edinburgh Award for the over 50s.
It is an achievement award offering challenges to individuals presenting them with possible new heights to scale and increase their contribution to life around them.
Mavis added: “It will be wonderful if this appeal gets a good response and some people come forward. It will complete the project.
“When I started it I didn’t realise it would be so hard as I thought most of our memories were intact but this apparently wasn’t the case.”
Rainbows is the first step on the Girl Guiding ladder and accepts girls between the ages of 5 and 7 before they are able to join Brownies. The first unit in the UK was formed 25 years ago this year.
