ASHFIELD District Council has set out its plans to re-focus and improve its services over the next five years.

Next Monday, councillors will consider budget plans for the next financial year, and a range of efficiency improvements needed for the longer term, as the authority experiences further cuts in Government funding.

Councillors will be asked to approve an efficiency plan for 2013/14, which reduces the council’s spending by £1.3 million, by re-structuring services, sharing services with neighbouring councils, and continuing to increase the income generated by the many trading arms of the council.

Coun leader John Knight said: “For the third year running members and officers have worked hard to find better ways to provide services with increasingly-limited resources. Our front line services have been preserved and their performance improved, despite a 27 per cent reduction in Government funding over four years.”

Because the council has been able to reduce its spending, the report suggests that much smaller reductions in spending may be required in future years.

Planning is already underway to find £750k of efficiency savings for the financial year 2014/15.

Deputy Leader, Coun John Wilmott added: “We have set out a five-year plan which allows us to be flexible if our resources increase in the future. Our primary objective will always be to ensure that our residents experience the highest quality services we can provide.”

Councillors will also consider whether the council tax should be frozen in 2013, but a decision on this will not be taken until 4th March.
