Band go from no instruments to top-five finish

ELEVEN weeks ago, the newly-formed Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass Band had no instruments, rehearsal venue or uniforms.

But now they are celebrating a creditable fifth-place finish, from 16 bands, in their debut in section three of the Midlands Regional Championships.

Playing the set test-piece, 'The Once And Future King', Hucknall and Linby were given their top five finish by adjudicators Chris Wormald and Colin Hardy.

What's more, the composer of the test piece, who was in the audience, said that the locals' performance was one of three that "got under the skin of the music", which is based on the legend of King Arthur.

This was much-appreciated praise for the band and musical director Paul Whyley, who have worked tirelessly over the last couple of months.

And it also vindicated the decision to launch the band – a move that has been supported by donations and by businessman Richard Darrington, who has made his club, The Empire in Hucknall, available free of charge for them to rehearse.

Anyone interested in joining the band or learning to play an instrument can either ring Mr Whyley on 07811 448676 or drop in on rehearsals at The Empire on Thursdays at 7.30 pm.
