Beauties to do battle for Miss Nottingham crown
TWO pretty girls from Hucknall are dreaming of becoming Miss World — after reaching the final of Miss Nottingham 2010.
Now Astra Darington (19) and Lauren Richardson (20) need your votes as they go up against each other and 28 other girls at Nottingham Crowne Plaza on Sunday May 2.
The winner will then go on to represent Nottingham in the Miss England grand final. The winner of that contest will go to Vietnam for Miss World 2010.
The girls were selected as Miss Nottingham finalists after putting themselves forward and sending in some pictures.
Neither Astra or Lauren, who went to college in Nottingham together, knew the other had entered until they were selected.
Astra, who lives on Ruffs Drive and is studying English language and literature at the University of Sheffield, said: "I entered to prove that it is possible to have brains and beauty and that today's Miss England competitors have to have substance as well as style.
"I would also like to say a big thankyou to my sponsors, GlazeBee Windows and Doors, of Newstead, and to my family and friends."
Lauren, of Moss Road, studies sociology at Sheffield Hallam University. She said: "I've always wanted to enter Miss Nottingham but never had the courage.
"But this year my New Year's resolution was to do something exciting and new. Entering Miss Nottingham was ideal.
"I also wanted to prove that you can accomplish anything with a little optimism and a smile. To be a finalist means so much to me. It's made me feel more confident in myself and has given me the opportunity to represent my community.
"I entered online and was surprised to receive an e-mail asking me to attend the semi-finals. I was very nervous but the other girls were lovely. I had an interview and photo-shoot and received another e-mail later telling me I was a finalist."
