Bestwood villagers get the hump - over road humps!
TEMPERATURES soared at a meeting of Bestwood Parish Council over the new, controversial traffic-calming measures on Moor Road.
The 36,000 scheme, paid for by Notts County Council, has been installed in the village in a bid to cut accidents on a notorious blackspot.
It is made up of 14 sets of raised traffic humps with 'dragon s teeth markings and speed-limit signs at each end.
But at the council meeting, some villagers said their lives were being made hell by the noise from lorries as they pass over the humps.
One said: "We have lorries coming down at all times and all you hear is bang bang bang as they pass. This scheme is not working."
One woman said she could feel her windows rattling when traffic went over the humps.
Calls were made for speed cameras to replace the humps but Coun Marlene Gee said these were considered by the county council to be too expensive.
Another resident criticised parish council chairman Coun Denis Beeston for supporting the scheme especially as he does not live on Moor Road himself and does not drive.
But an exasperated Coun Beeston stormed: "You know full well that people objected strongly to speeding in the village.
"We have had at least 20 accidents in the last five years, many involving children."
He added that all residents in the village had been consulted on the plans and there had been a democratic vote, which decided the scheme should go ahead.
The vote, held in May, showed 244 (53%) in favour of the traffic-calming measures and 213 (47%) against. Some 165 (27%) did not bother to vote.
Two women, who live on Moor Road, expressed their support for the scheme but were shouted down by the more vocal objectors.
"It s not ideal but, if you live on a main road, you have to accept some noise," said one of the women.
Coun Beeston agreed, adding: "If you are going to live near an aerodrome, you can t say you don t like noise from planes."
