BIKES repaired and recycled by offenders will go under the hammer to raise cash for Nottingham’s hospitals at Arthur Johnson and Sons auctioneers on Saturday (9th March).

All are welcome to come along and bid for around 70 mountain bikes, racers and children’s models.

Proceeds of the auction go to Nottingham Hospitals Charity in aid of the new centre for cystic fibrosis patients at the City Hospital.

The first bike auction held in December 2012 raised almost £3,000 for charity. Bikes are sold for anything from £20 to £100 each.

The once-discarded cycles have been recovered by the Police and restored by offenders sentenced to work unpaid hours through Nottinghamshire Probation Trust’s Community Payback scheme.

The bike workshop is run from Nottingham City Council’s Woolsthorpe depot in Bilborough, a base from where offenders can learn new skills to help them put the brakes on crime.

Sheila Wright, Nottinghamshire Probation Trust’s Director with responsibility for Community Payback, said: “The bike workshop is a fantastic project. We had a great turnout at our first auction in December and hope this one will be an equal, if not greater success.

“Joining forces with the Police and City Council provides a positive way for offenders to repay the community for their crimes and support a very worthy cause at the same time.

“The scheme helps offenders develop essential employability skills such as team working, timekeeping and working to instruction.”

The auction at Arthur Johnson and Sons Auctioneers, Meadow Lane, Nottingham, NG2 3GY, starts at 10am.
