Bingo only is future for Hucknall's Byron Cinema
HUCKNALL'S former Byron Cinema is to become part of a bingo superclub, it has been revealed.
For months, there has been speculation about the future of the landmark picture house, which ceased showing films last June.
But now it has been confirmed that the last movie has definitely been shown there – because the cinema is to be integrated into the Byron Bingo Club, which occupies the same High Street building.
The club is owned by leading company Stylus Sports, based in the south of England, which is planning a major upgrade that could take up to a year.
Manager Jane Bonsall said it was proposed that the club would eventually provide all-day bingo.
The 450-seat cinema, which first opened back in 1935, was taken over by Sherwood businessman Asif Sahil in 2003.
But despite a 100,000 upgrading, it was constantly beset with difficulties.
The cinema was closed for three months a year ago because of problems with its licence. And in February last year, it was branded a potential death-trap because it had been operating without a fire alarm.
