Boxer's charity punch in memory of shooting victim

A FEMALE boxer has packed a punch with a fundraising effort in memory of Bulwell man Bernard Langton, who was shot dead earlier this year.

Rising star Michelle Baron went to school with Mr Langton (27), who died from a gunshot wound after being found in a Nottingham alleyway in the early hours of Monday May 25.

Now 28-year-old Michelle wants to donate the proceeds from ticket-sales at her next bout to the Done With It campaign.

The initiative works with hundreds of Nottingham youngsters in a bid to steer them away from guns, knives and violence.

Cash was raised through Michelle's appearance on the card in a King Of The Ring event at Nottingham's Rock City on Sunday September 20.

It was Michelle's second semi-professional fight and the bill included a Thai boxing bout and mixed martial arts.

She said: "Bernard and I went to Rushcliffe Comprehensive. His cousin, Curtis, also went there when he came down from Liverpool.

"Bernard always said hello when he saw me on the doors of bars and clubs in the city centre. He always had a smile for people.

"I wanted to do something for charity. I saw Done With It and thought it was excellent."

As part of Michelle's association with Done With It, she has also been running female-boxing sessions.

The scheme's founder, Clayton Byfield, said: "Michelle rang me up after sending an e-mail offering to do some voluntary work with us."

Father-of-two Mr Langton, who was known as 'Nard', was allegedly shot in the Paris nightclub on Broadway in the city's Lace Market area.

He was found in the alleyway close to the Pitcher And Piano bar, which is also in the Lace Market.

Paramedics gave treatment at the scene but Mr Langton died on the way to hospital.

THREE men accused of Mr Langton's murder are due to appear in court arly next month.

They are Anthony Tirado (24), of Ballerat Crescent, Top Valley; Dion Griffin (34), of Hogan Gardens, Top Valley; and David Stokes (27), of Collindale Road, Birmingham.

The hearing is at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday October 5. A four-week trial is expected to take place next year.
