BREAKING NEWS: Cop killer back behind bars

A MAN who killed a police officer in Bulwell, causing widespread shock and outrage, has been sent back to jail for an assault less than three months after he he was released early.
David Parfitt received a 12-year sentence in 2003 for the manslaughter of dog handler Pc Ged Walker.
Dog handler Pc Walker, who was 42, died in hospital from head injuries two days after he tried to stop Parfitt driving away in a stolen taxi on St Albans Road.
Parfitt was set free in March and was staying at a hostel in Lincoln. But he attacked a girlfriend whom he had met online.
Now aged 35, Parfitt was given a two-year jail sentence at Leicester Crown Court this week for actual bodily harm and six months, to run consecutively, for attempting to pervert the course of justice.
The court heard that he punched and headbutted his new partner, who is from Lincoln.
Parfitt, formerly of Wareham Close, Aspley, was also on licence from prison after being released early from a robbery sentence when he killed Pc Walker.
Parfitt denied the assault on his girlfriend when charged by Lincolnshire Police. But he was convicted in August after being found guilty by a jury at Lincoln Crown Court.
Speaking after the sentence was imposed, Lincolnshire Police spokesman Dick Holmes said Parfitt had told the woman about his past. But he convinced her when he said his life had changed and he had turned himself around.
“When he is in drink, he becomes a violent individual and a nasty piece of work,” Mr Holmes added.
Phil Matthews, chairman of the Notts Police Federation, said: “We think he should have got a longer sentence in the first place. The fact that he has abused the parole he was given speaks for itself. Hopefully, he will now serve the rest of his sentence.”
Parfitt was found guilty of killing Pc Walker when he appeared at Birmingham Court in December 2003 and was given an extra year behind bars on top of the 12 years for driving offences.
Pc Walker was the first Nottinghamshire officer to die in the line of duty since 1978. A memorial stone has been placed at the scene of the tragedy, near the junction with Cantrell Road and at the entrance to Bulwell Forest golf course.
An annual dog show takes place every summer in memory of Pc Walker and this year’s event, held in September, attracted hundreds of people.
Over the years the show has raised a total of about £8,000 for good causes.
