Bulwell’s Andrew wins competition for best blooms
DESPITE it being the wettest summer for 100 years, one Bulwell gardener managed to fight against the elements and come out a winner.
Andrew Marecki, of Bracknell Crescent, has been dead-heading, pruning, digging and mowing in all weathers to maintain his pride and joy and all his efforts paid off when he took home a trophy in a gardening competition.
Nottingham City Homes set up the competition back in 1933 to recognise the hard work and commitment of gardeners on council estates across the city. It has developed over the years and is very popular with residents.
Andrew is the proud winner in Area 4, where he competed against other green-fingered friends from Highbury Vale, Stock Hill and Basford.
“I was very surprised to win this year as the weather has been so bad and I wasn’t as happy with the results,” said Andrew who is celebrating his fifth win. “But other entrants must have had the same problems and I just clinched it.”
Andrew is a joiner by trade but loves to spend time relaxing in his garden and tending to his shrubs and flowers.
As well as making a water feature out of an old recycled sink, his garden boasts small vegetable containers and a greenhouse.
“I grow onions, cucumbers and various vegetables and have fruit trees too. I also start most of my container plants from seeds,” explained Andrew who is married to Kerry and has three daughters, Kayley, Anya and Codie. “I like to get the girls involved and they help me plant and water the seeds.”
Changes were made to this year’s competition to make it easier for people to take part which resulted in a bumber number of entries for the judges to choose from.
All the winners gathered for a special presentation event at Nottingham’s Council House to receive their trophies from the Sheriff of Nottingham.
NCH Chief Executive Mick Murphy said: “The garden competition is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the pride people have in our estates.”
