Bulwell school helps feed hard-up local families

A CARING Bulwell school is helping to feed poverty-stricken local families.

Crabtree Primary School has donated just under a quarter of a tonne of food for the Bestwood and Bulwell Foodbank.

The Rev Andy Morris, vicar at St Matthew’s Church, Bestwood Estate, and St Philip’s, Top Valley, visited the Steadfold Close school to collect the food.

He said it was a particularly generous gesture by the school, considering that Crabtree is hardly an affluent area and 70% of the pupils receive school meals.

Since last September, the food bank has provided a total of 6,000 meals for more than 300 adults and just under 300 children.

In May 2012, Andy completed a 145-mile bike ride from Workington, Cumbria to Sunderland in aid of the food bank.

This provides 10 meals (four breakfasts, three lunches and three dinners) to families so needy that they receive a special voucher for services, including doctors, schools or children’s centres.
