Bulwell teacher praises community spirit following fire at St Mary’s Primary School
THE headmaster of a Bulwell school struck by fire has praised the tremendous community spirit shown during the clean-up operation.
St Mary’s Primary’s Daniel Farthing said that the help and support of other schools, parents, residents and local business has been ‘outstanding’ as the Ragdale Road school recovers from a store-cupboard blaze which destroyed equipment, toys and work.
Desipte a lingering smell of smoke the school is now safely re-open, with some lessons taking place in the main hall until classrooms are odour-free.
“Everyone has rallied round us, making donations and offering help,” said Mr Farthing, who has been head for 18 months. “For so many people to come to our aid shows tremendous community spirit, for which we are most grateful.”
The store-cupboard blaze on Janaury 4th was blamed on an an electrical fault and resulted in the closure of the school for the majority of pupils. Year six students returned last Wednesday as their classroom - a separate mobile unit - was unaffected.
In the aftermath, Top Valley School offered equipment, accommodation and even their own cleaners whilst staff at Bulwell Tesco raised £500 towards replacing toys lost in the foundation unit.
Yesterday, Stockhill firefighters held an awarenesws assembly with the children and a question and answer session to reassure parents.
This weekend, the cause of the fire will be ripped out, with industrial cleaners carrying out a ‘cleaning bomb’ to combat the smell. Damaged flooring is also set to go, with reconstruction of the gutted storage unit and ladies toilets taking place over half term.
