Bulwell set to get ‘Superloos’

NOTTINGHAM City Council isn’t getting too BOGGED down with its budget — after announcing plans to save £15,000 by switching Bulwell’s public toilets for so-called ‘Superloos’.

The toilets (pictured), which are currently staffed, are at the bus station in the town centre. New toilets would be self-cleaning and residents would have to pay to use them.

The proposal is all part of a new budget announced by the council to save up to £21 million this year.

Local residents are being urged to take part in a consultation on the overall plans.

In a bid to boost funds, the council is planning a 3.49 per cent council tax.

The council says it is facing a 7.36 per cent cut in government funding for 2012-13, as well as having to spend extra money on children’s and adult services due to increased demand.

This week, city councillors approved putting the cost-cutting proposals out to public consultation and now residents are being urged to have their say.

But anti-cuts campaigners have already made their feelings known after launching a campaign calling on city councillors to vote against the proposed budget cuts.

Nottinghamshire Save Our Services (Notts SOS) held a stall on the Market Square to raise awareness of what the council is planning.

Claire Taylor, from Notts SOS, said: “Council leader Jon Collins and deputy leader Graham Chapman (both Labour) have been vocally critical of central government. Now it’s time for them to put their money where their mouth is and refuse to pass the cuts onto the people of Nottingham. Even a single council refusing to implement a cuts budget would shake the coalition government.”

A consultation event is taking place on Bulwell Market Place next Friday (February 3) from 9.30 am — DISPIC NHUD 12-0138-2.
