Buses forced to change as the EU sees red

TRAFFIC lights are not the only things that have been changing from red to green in Hucknall.
The illuminated red disc at the front of buses on one of Trent Barton’s ‘Connect’ routes has had to follow suit.
The colour of the disc has now been altered to green to comply with a European Union ruling.
There was a general jeer when the change was reported by Trent Barton’s service manager, Vitto Pizzuti, at a meeting of Hucknall’s Reach Out Residents group.
One man who clearly saw red about it said: “So we are having to bow to Europe yet again.”
The Connect buses link Hucknall’s main tram stop with the High Street and the town’s outlying estates.
The buses have come to prominence this year with three being named after ‘Hucknall Heroes’.
The first was dedicated after Lance-Corporal Paul Sandford, who was killed while fighting for the Mercian Regiment on the front line in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.
Next to be honoured was school caretaker Eddie Heath, whose quick thinking helped save the life of a pupil. And third was well-known local builder William Fox.
Each dedication was made in a special ceremony on Market Place.
A call was made at the meeting for a new bus stop on Common Lane, Hucknall. “There is a stop on one side of the road but not on the other,” one resident claimed.
Pleas were also made for bus services in the Hucknall area to be subsidised to ensure a more reliable service.
If this was available, people needing to get to work would not be dependent on their cars and this would help to avoid traffic congestion, said one woman.
At the annual general meeting of Reach Out, officers re-elected were Sally Wyatt as chairman, Davina Williams as secretary and Jean Toseland as treasurer.
