Business owners warned to comply with fire safety laws

Business owners are being warned by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to pay greater attention to fire safety laws, following its recent prosecution of a Mansfield retailer for breaching the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

All building owners and occupiers have a legal responsibility to protect their customers and staff against the risk of fire. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning that it will take action against anyone found to be in breach of these fire safety regulations.

Vic McMillen, Fire Prevention Manager, said: “We are here to provide advice and support to local businesses and are always willing to help to make sure they comply with the fire safety legislation. However, the public should continue to be reassured that we take any breaches of fire safety very seriously and will use legal sanctions where necessary.

“We want to make sure that business owners are aware of their responsibilities and duties to ensure that their staff and customers are safe. It is disappointing when a company chooses to place people at risk from fire.”

Fire safety guidance for all types of business premises is available at www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-communities-and-local-government/series/fire-safety-law-and-guidance-documents-for-business or by contacting Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service’s fire safety advice line on 0115 9575231 or at fireprotection@notts-fire.gov.uk.
