Call by charity to boycott animal circus
A NATIONAL animal-rights charity has called on the public to boycott a circus that has rolled into the Dispatch district.
Peter Jolly's Circus pitched up in Hucknall in the fields at the Bulwell end of the bypass, at its junction with Hucknall Lane. It opened its big top on Wednesday June 16 and is here until Sunday June 19.
It is one of the UK's few remaining 'animal circuses' and features llamas, camels, zebras, horses, a bull, dogs and a fox. The circus, which has been running for 38 years, is described as a traditional family show.
But a spokesman for the charity Captive Animals Protection Society (CAPS) said: "We would encourage people to avoid all animal circuses. People can enjoy circuses without animals being forced to perform.
"Most circuses now feature an all-human cast, removing the need to keep animals confined for long periods, to transport them around the country and to use hidden training methods to make them perform in the ring.
"We would encourage people to avoid all animal circuses and wait until one of the many amazing all-human shows arrives in town."
The charity says that a recent scientific study concluded that circuses fail to provide some of the most basic welfare needs for wild animals, such as space and social groups.
Those who carried out the study allegedly found there was no evidence to suggest that the needs of wild animals can be met in circuses.
CAPS was founded in 1957 and calls for an end to the practice of forcing animals to perform for public amusement. Patterns in hair are just part of fashion at the moment."
