Camera clue after estate hit by wave of car break-ins
TWELVE vehicles were broken into in one night on Hucknall’s Ruffs Estate, the town’s police have revealed.
The spate of attacks happened overnight between Tuesday September 21 and Wednesday September 22. Initial enquiries by investigating officers drew a blank and since then an appeal has been sent out through the Neighbourhood Alert crime e-mail system.
This included two images captured on CCTV of potential suspects. One of the shots is shown to the right.
Hucknall’s police chief, Insp Nick Butler, told the Dispatch that a local man has been arrested in connection with the attacks and that he is currently on police bail pending further inquiries.
He pointed out that in half of the break-ins, vehicles had been left insecure.
Insp Butler appealed to motorists not to leave such items as mobile phones, keys, clothing, sunglasses and CDs in their cars or vans and to make sure the vehicles were locked.
He said the suspected offender had been caught on CCTV trying the door handles of cars as he walked past.
The crimes were raised by a man who attended a recent meeting of the Reach Out Residents Group at Holgate Comprehensive School in Hucknall.
He told the meeting: “I was one of the victims.”
Group chairman Sally Wyatt said she was surprised that the group had not been informed earlier of the offences under the Neighbourhood Alert scheme.
But through the e-mail eventually sent out to subscribers, it was revealed that this was due to leads being investigated first.
