Carnival to mark start of Christmas
IT’S all systems go for the eagerly-awaited 18th Hucknall Christmas Carnival next Wednesday night.
Seven thousand people crowded into the town centre for last year’s event and a similar turnout is expected again.
Co-ordinator Allan Johnson, of Hucknall Rotary Club, said: “The 2011 carnival was voted the best ever but we are confident that this year’s will be just as successful.
“The carnival has become the biggest attraction on the Hucknall calendar and we have every intention of making sure it continues to be so.”
The customary parade into the town centre will this year start from the Hucknall Tesco superstore car park. It will once again be led by a Boys’ Brigade band and feature the Rotary club Santa’s sleigh, as well as various colourful floats.
The lights of the Christmas tree on the Market Place will be switched on by the chairman of Ashfield District Council, Coun Ken Knight (Lab), of Hucknall.
Dino and Pete, of Capital FM radio, will take part in the countdown and the rector of Hucknall, Canon Kathryn Herrod, will deliver a Christmas message.
Phil Rostance and the Marshall Band will perform on stage and Gordon Pearson’s fun fair will occupy most of the Market Place.
There will be four charity stalls on High Street as well as a Santa’s grotto in the scout hut at the back of the John Godber Centre.
The carnival will coincide with the opening of the annual tree festival in Hucknall Parish Church. Refreshments will be provided there as well as at the Godber Centre and the Central Methodist Church on Baker Street.
Temporary road closures will take place from 6 pm to 8 pm at the junctions of Baker Street and Ogle Street, High Street and Watnall Road, South Street and West Street and Titchfield Street and High Street.
To allow for the parade, Ashgate Road, Station Road and High Street will be closed from 6.30 pm to 6.55 pm.
There will be diversions for buses and other traffic via Spring Street, Sandy Lane, Derbyshire Lane and Watnall Road.
Ashfield Council has granted £2,000 towards the cost of the carnival and the Rotary club is being supported by members of Hucknall Round Table, who will act as marshals for the procession and provide other help.
