Concern over empty homes
CONCERN about a high number of empty houses in Newstead was raised at a meeting of the parish council.
Coun Philip Burnham said he could see six from his backyard – some privately-owned and others belonging to Gedling Borough Council.
Members thought this state of affairs ironic in view of constant claims that more and more new homes are needed.
Meanwhile the council clerk, John Chisholm, said nothing had still been done about gaping 15-foot holes left by the theft of two large manhole-covers about four months ago.
Mr Chisholm reported that he had finally received a letter from Mark Guy, of Notts County Council, to say they were trying to find out who should deal with the holes.
However the parish council believe it is the responsibility of the county council themselves.
Members have also asked Gedling Council to put up signs to warn of gaps in steel fencing at the village cricket ground.
They claim these are a potential hazard to children running out on to Station Avenue.
Newstead residents were also warned to be vigilant after a spate of five shed-burglaries in the village during September.
