County’s ‘most wanted’ criminal back behind bars

Prolific burglar Glyn Brookes

A PROLIFIC burglar from Hucknall who was caught after more than three months on the run from an open prison — during which he committed a total of 22 break-ins — has had four more years added to his original sentence.

Glyn John Paul Brookes, formerly of Annesley Road, had become Nottinghamshire Police’s most wanted man and a widespread public appeal for information about him was issued.

The Dispatch even featured him on our front page in a plea to the public to help snare him.

Brookes was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court this week after pleading guilty to escaping from lawful custody and three burglaries — two in Bestwood Village and one in Filey, North Yorkshire — since his escape.

One of the Bestwood addresses was the home of an elderly woman who was in hospital or a care home at the time.

The 38-year-old also asked for another 19 burglaries — six in Nottinghamshire and 13 in Filey — to be taken into consideration.

He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years for the burglaries and a consecutive six months in prison for absconding from North Sea Camp Prison, Lincolnshire, on July 5. He was four years into a 12-year sentence for 10 burglaries, with a staggering total of 388 taken into consideration.

Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Racher, of Mansfield CID, said: “Brookes is his own worst enemy. By escaping custody, he has effectively cancelled out most of the time he’d already put in in jail.

“He now has a few more years behind bars to think about the lives he has intruded upon and sense of security he has compromised.

“Today’s outcome also means that, for the foreseeable future, law-abiding, decent people, who make honest livings and deserve to feel safe in their own homes, will no long feel the threat of this self-seeking criminal.”

The court heard that during one of the Bestwood break-ins, Brookes dropped a list of phone numbers of his immediate family. He was finally arrested at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham on Monday October 15.
