Dennis The Menace celebrates World Book Day

DENNIS The Menace met Harry Potter during a fun-filled event to mark World Book Day at a Bulwell school.

For youngsters and staff dressed up as the famous fictional characters at Bonington Junior School.

And joining Dennis and Harry were Dorothy from 'The Wizard of Oz', Captain Jack Sparrow from 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' and Little Red Riding Hood, amongst others.

Bonington head teacher Robert Dunbar said: "It was a big celebration of books and it went outstandingly well. It was all about raising the profile of books and the benefits of reading.

"Everyone had a lot of fun but it had an important message behind it. That reading can bring a lot of enjoyment and that you cannot hope to get far without being able to read."

"The day was taken up with things such as book recitals and book groups."

There was also an 'extreme reading' challenge whereby pupils and staff were asked to take pictures of themselves or others reading in strange places.

One picture showed a teacher reading by the Statue of Liberty in New York, while pupils' offerings included a cat reading 'Cat in the Hat' and a snowman immersed in a book.

World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading and is observed in more than 100 countries across the globe with the aim of encouraging more people to read.
