Diamond wedding anniversary celebrations for Hucknall couple Laurence and Gladys Stimpson
Diamonds are forever, as is the bond of Hucknall couple Laurence and Gladys Stimpson (nee Saunders), who this week celebrate 60 years together.
On 7th of March, Laurence, 87, and Gladys, 82, will celebrate their Diamond anniversary with family and friends, marking the momentous occasion with a party at the Station Hotel, Hucknall.
Daughter Pamela, who is writing to Buckingham Palace to notify The Queen of the milestone, says utter compatibility and her parents’ identical loving natures have forged an unbreakable bond.
She said: “They are just so alike, just made for each other. They both have such loving natures and have always been family orientated. Reaching your Diamond wedding anniversary is quite an achievement these days, and I am very proud of my wonderful parents.”
The couple married at St John the Divine parish church in Bulwell in 1953 after meeting at a dance.
Hucknall born Laurence used to cycle to Bulwell on his bike almost every day to court Gladys, whom he had taken a shine to as soon as the pair met.
In their younger years, Laurence worked as an overman at Linby colliery, whilst Gladys worked for Stag Furniture in Hucknall. During their retirement, and indeed, their youth, the couple enjoyed many family holidays, with the quaint seaside town of Scarborough being a firm favourite, along with exciting overseas trips to France, Cyprus, the Balearic Islands and the Canaries but to mention a few.
Pamela added: “We take mum and dad back to Scarborough every year as it holds such lovely memories for us all, this year being no exception as we are going back in July.”
The couple have four grandchildren, Ben, Tom, Carly and Mark, and three great grandchildren, Ella, Robyn and Maisie, who they love spending time with, plus a close circle of friends and neighbours with whom they enjoy socialising.
