GETTING UP in the early hours to prepare the papers for delivery has been a way of life for Diane Mellor but not anymore as the dedicated employee has just retired.

Diane has been a committed worker at the Annesley Road newsagents for 30 years and even when the business was sold over seven years ago, new owners Rebecca and David Andrew recognised they couldn’t manage without her.

“Di has been an absolute diamond,” said Rebecca of R and D News. “We kept all three of Jack and Mary Bell’s staff on when we bought the shop because they knew the business, and the customers.”

Over the years, Diane has been a rock to her new employers showing them the ins and outs of the trade.

“We had never run a newsagents before but having Di there made it easier and she trained us up,” added Rebecca.

“We are really sad to lose her as she has always been there for us and is more like a mum to me than just a colleague.

“She doesn’t just do her job and leave -she always goes the extra mile and has even stepped in to give us childcare when we needed it.”

But despite retiring, Diane will remain busy with family commitments and enjoying the time to tend to her garden and small-holding.

“I’ve seen children coming in over the years to buy sweets with their pocket money and now they return with their own children,” remembers Diane who lives on Papplewick Lane and is married to Ian.

“The shop has always had a great atmosphere. I have worked with lovely people over the years who have become friends and met many customers who have become familiar faces.”

Rebecca and her staff all gathered to say farewell to Diane on Wednesday as she completed her final shift.

“Di has been simply brilliant and I want to say a massive thank you to her for everything.”
