Disabled woman urges action on danger potholes

A DISABLED woman has hit out at potholes that have become an “abomination” on the street where she lives in Hucknall.
Anna Ludlow (58), of Rockwood Crescent, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 14 in the lower femur bone in one of her legs.
Treatment killed the cancer but also part of the bone and she has been unable to walk properly ever since.
She has now retired on medical grounds and would be housebound but for her trusty Mini car.
But she says the potholes and general state of the road are starting to cause problems with her lifeline vehicle and believes action should be taken to make permanent repairs.
“The stupidity of all this is that we know that roads around us, including Hillcrest Drive and Laxton Drive, have been resurfaced,” said Anna, who formerly worked for BBC TV and is married to Andrew.
“We just seem to have been forgotten and left to cope with a road that is in a completely unacceptable state.”
Anna says she complained about the condition of Rockwood Crescent five years ago.
Council workers responded and patched up the holes as a temporary measure.
However Anna, who now works on website design in her spare time, says things have become worse than ever this year after two consecutive harsh winters when temperatures hit record lows.
Water has frozen beneath the road’s surface and caused the potholes, some of which are several centimetres deep, to widen.
“They are now bordering on dangerous,” said Anna. “Whose responsibility would it be if a pothole caused an accident? Soon refuse lorries will refuse to come and empty our bins because of the problems.”
Ashfield District Council took action to make a severe pothole on Rockwood Crescent safe after being contacted by the Dispatch.
Edd de Coverly, head of neighbourhood services, said: “We undertake pot-hole repairs on behalf of Notts County Council and are guided by its policies. This street has not been included in the county council’s structural resurfacing programme for the coming year.
“However, we will keep the problem under review and will respond to any dangerous potholes that become apparent.”
