Dive in for free swimming

YOUNGSTERS and pensioners are being invited to dive in and enjoy free swimming at Hucknall's two pools.

For Ashfield District Council have dropped charges for anyone aged 16 or below and anyone aged over 60 attending public swimming sessions at Hucknall or Edgewood Leisure Centres in the town.

The initiative launched on Wednesday (April 1) and is in line with a national campaign backed by the government to promote swimming, general fitness, more active lifestyls and well-being.

In Hucknall, the initiative is being promoted by the council through Sport and Leisure Management (SLM), who manage the council-owned centres.

Hucknall's Coun Louise Bradshaw (Lib Dem), who is Ashfield's lead member for communities and leisure strategy, said: "Swimming is an excellent sport for all-round fitness and well-being.

"Offering free swimming is a real measure of our commitment to making a real difference to people's lives. Our ambitious swimming strategy has paved the way for first-class swimming opportunities in the area and we are now well-placed to deliver this free swimming initiative."

To take advantage of the free swim offer, those in the target age groups must have a valid Everyone Active activity card.

The cards are free and available via an application form available at every Ashfield Council leisure centre and pool or by logging on at www/everyoneactive.com.

It is estimated that thousands of people will be eligible but the free swim offer only applies to public swim sessions, the times of which should be checked beforehand.
