Doctor struck off for 'risking patient's health'
A GERMAN doctor who worked in Bulwell showed he was "willing to risk a patient's health to pursue a vendetta", a special panel have ruled.
Dr Rainer Zierer, a former locum general practitioner (GP) at the St Albans Medical Practice on Hucknall Lane, has been struck off the medical register because of "serious and appalling misconduct".
The fitness-to-practise panel, held by doctors' watchdog, the General Medical Council (GMC), criticised Dr Zierer's "reckless disregard" for their principles and a "deliberate flouting of them".
A report of the decision reads: "Although the panel heard no evidence of any of Dr Zierer's patients coming to harm, they considered that his lack of insight and unwillingness to respond to offers to help him improve his performance denote a continuing risk to patient safety."
The panel were particularly concerned about a "scandalous" letter Dr Zierer wrote to a patient in which he revealed his hostility to those questioning his performance.
The panel decided there was no truth in allegations made by Dr Zierer against other people in the medical profession.
After concerns were raised, a review was carried out of Dr Zierer's medical records of patients he treated at the St Albans surgery on two consecutive days in September 2007.
The panel decided that Dr Zierer failed to give patients an adequate examination and did not heed information in the patients' notes.
They concluded that Dr Zierer prescribed drugs that were "inappropriate, unnecessary and with an incorrect dosage schedule". A doctor who carried out the review stated that Dr Zierer's actions were at times "bizarre".
Dr Zierer was also accused of failing to refer a patient diagnosed as suffering from gynaecomastia (enlargement of the breasts in a male).
He also refused to stop practising when an investigation started into his conduct, the panel heard.
The panel ruled that Dr Zierer's ability to do his job was "impaired by reason of misconduct" and that the standard of his professional performance was "unacceptably low".
Dr Zierer is to be erased from the medical register 28 days after the sanction was imposed on Thursday January 21.
He will not now be able to work in the UK as a doctor but can re-apply to be put on the register after five years, although he would need to prove his fitness to practise.
Dr Zierer failed to attend or be represented at the panel hearing in Manchester, although he had been told that it could take place in his absence.
