English exam-papers should be re-marked
ENGLISH exams which brought disappointing results for teenagers in the Dispatch district and the rest of the UK should be marked again, says a teachers’ union.
Exam regulator Ofqual has stated that young people who did not get the results they were expecting in their English GCSEs will have to re-sit the exam.
Ofqual carried out an investigation into concerns that this summer’s exams were not marked in the same way as those taken in January.
It concluded that January’s English GCSE exams were graded ‘generously’ compared to the June exams, which led to some students being given lower grades than predicted.
The regulator said exam boards must now offer students who completed the new GCSE English qualification in June an opportunity to take an early re-sit.
But Ivan Wells, joint Nottinghamshire division secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), criticised this approach because it would put students through unnecessary stress when they would be embarking on A-level courses.
“Instead of offering re-sits, the exam boards should just re-mark,” said Mr Wells. “We want an independent inquiry into how schools worked towards one goal and the exam boards towards another.”
Chief regulator Glenys Stacey said: “We will talk with schools and exam boards to see what lessons can be learned.”
