FORMER Hucknall MP Paddy Tipping has created history by becoming Nottinghamshire’s first ever Police and Crime Commissioner.

The former Sherwood MP won the contest after a second round of votes — defeating independent candidate, Malcolm Spencer.

Conservative candidate Tony Roberts and independent, Raj Chandran, bowed out after the first round.

The low turnout for yesterday’s election nationally was mirrored across the county.

In Nottinghamshire just 16.77 per cent of the electorate went to the ballot box — with 13.47 per cent in Mansfield; 15.09 per cent in Ashfield and 19.11 per cent in Newark & Sherwood.

There was also Labour success in Derbyshire for Alan Charles.

See next Friday’s Dispatch for more on the elections.
