Fear of major accident at railway crossing

A POLICE officer has told of his fears that a major accident could have occurred on a railway level crossing in Newstead during wintry weather.

The village's new police beat manager, Pc Matt Wardle, raised the issue at a meeting of Newstead Parish Council.

He said he was worried about cars not being able to stop at the Robin Hood-line crossing, near Newstead railway station, when a train was coming because of the icy conditions.

But he claimed that when he got in touch with the county council, they told him they had run out of grit. "I went back to the scene the next day and nothing had been done," said Pc Wardle.

Members said this reaction contradicted a letter from the county council which stated: "If the police ask for roads to be gritted, we will do it."

Pc Wardle pointed out that it was up to the county council to decide if a road was to be closed because of dangerous conditions.

Chairman Coun Trish Wise said the parish council should make a firm stand in pressing for grit bins in the village.

She claimed: "We should tell the county council that enough is enough.

"The village has insufficient grit bins in places which matter."

It was claimed at the parish council's previous meeting that during last month's cold snap, icy conditions had stopped Gedling Borough Council bin lorries getting round the village.

Members agreed to back a corresponding request for grit bins made by Coun Joe Lonergan (Con), Newstead's representative on the county council, to portfolio holder Coun Stella Smedley (Lab).
