Footbridge plans unveiled to make notorious Hucknall and Bulwell death spot safer

THE COMPANY that owns the rail network has unveiled its plans for a footbridge at a notorious crossing that has claimed the lives of a number of people in recent years.
Network Rail has submitted a planning application to Ashfield District Council for a new fully-accessible footbridge to replace Bayles and Wylies level crossing near Bestwood Village.
The crossing has been temporarily closed for six months while the plans are developed.
Lindsey Inger (13) tragically died at the tram and train crossing, on the boundary of Hucknall and Bulwell, on 28th November.
On 9th February this year, a man was killed at the same location, which also saw the deaths of Jean Hoggart (65) and her grandson Michael Dawson (seven) in 2008 and that of Janet Sawyer (52) in 2009.
Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, explained: “We are progressing the scheme as quickly as possible in order to restore the route over the railway and tram line. The decision to temporarily close the level crossing was taken in the interests of safety following a number of tragic incidents. We are grateful for the support of Nottinghamshire County Council in granting the order.
“We are committed to getting a structure in place quickly whilst also taking local opinion into account and have been working with the council and NET to develop our plans.”
Network Rail is hosting an open event to share its plans with the local community.
It takes place on Thursday 21st March at St Marks Church, Bestwood Village between 3pm and 7pm, with a Network Rail team on hand to explain the proposals.
Sherwood MP Mark Spencer commented: “I would encourage people to go along and comment if they have any concerns or support the plans if they can.”
